Services for young people at Birchwood Highland
Services offered by Birchwood Highland include support for young people aged 16 to 25 years. Community Support Services are available from our bases in Inverness, Easter Ross, Lochaber and Caithness. Residential services are available from our 23 bedded Recovery Centre. All our services are inclusive of young people from age 16 and upwards, as well as being open to older adults, and aim to support young people in experiencing good mental health and to enjoy a good quality of life.
How does Birchwood Highland work with young people?
Every young person Birchwood Highland works with has individual needs and aspirations. Some young people feel stressed and anxious. Others may feel isolated or worthless, and that no one understands them. Many young people feel that they have no one to talk to about how they are really feeling. Some young people wish support with accessing education, training, volunteering or employment opportunities. Some young people wish support with managing family and other social relationships, or with their housing or with managing money.
All Birchwood Highland’s services have core values of independence, inclusion, and recovery. By listening to, and talking with a young person, we together develop a personal support plan, and agree goals to work towards, and these are kept under review as the support progresses. Other people who support the young person can be included in this process when relevant, and and we work alongside other professionals, and link young people with relevant specialist services who can also provide specialist assistance.
What are the benefits of Birchwood Highland support?
Birchwood Highland aims to enable and empower the young people we support to identify their own priorities, make positive choices, and to take steps to put these into action. We work towards a time when young people can manage more independently, or engage directly with key agencies, having gained more skills and confidence. Everyone is different, but examples of outcomes could include: improved, mental and physical health; developing strategies to self manage their own mental health; increased confidence; more productive relationships with family, friends, key professionals and agencies, and the local community. Some young people identify options for education, volunteering, training or employment and/or taking the next steps towards this. Some young people use their Birchwood Highland support to ensure they are living somewhere safe and suitable, and have the skills to maintain this. Any support provided by Birchwood Highland is continually reviewed as needs and priorities change.

How are services funded?
There are different funding possibilities that suit different situations, and you may have an assessment of your needs carried out by a social worker or other relevant professional involved in your support. If a young person has their own tenancy then Housing Support may be applicable, otherwise packages of care and/or support may be available through Self Directed Support (SDS) payments, or could be purchased privately. Your GP or other Health Care Provider, or Social Worker can talk through what might be available to you and discuss details about having an assessment.
Services may also be provided on a self-funding basis, where someone agrees the support and this is paid for privately, or please feel free to contact us directly for more information.
