2008 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Fun Runs, Sunday 5th October
Congratulations and thanks to all those who ran in the Marathon, 10K and 5K races to raise funds for Birchwood Highland.
This year as many as 23 competitors helped to raise sponsor money by running in the three events.
The photo opposite shows a team of staff and friends from Lochaber Support Service gertting ready for the 10K start. They raised over £1,000!
The Five Countries Bike Ride
A team of four cyclists, led by former Birchwood Highland employee Tina Bruce, completed a 19 day bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats in aid of Birchwood Highland and Highland Breast Care Association.
They were joined in the later stages by Tom Knowles of Birchwood Highland Lochaber Support Service, Stephen Dunphy, manager of Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre, and Peter Cattanach, Birchwood Highland Chief Executive.
Each day, the team updated their blog with photos and stories from their journey through England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. It's well worth a visit: http://thefivecountrieschallenge.blogspot.com/
A big thanks is due to all those who sponsored them, supported them and cheered them along the way.

2008 Loch Ness 360 Mountain Bike Marathon and Cycle Sportif road event
These cycling events took place on Sunday 17th August 2008.
Congratulations and thanks to Tom Knowles and Piers Trussell who took part in the 180 mountain bike event from Fort Augustus to Inverness on behalf of Birchwood Highland.
As he arrived at Bught Park with aching calf and neck muscles, Tom said "This is the toughest thing I've ever done on a bike - John O'Groats will be a dawdle after this!".
Tom, a Birchwood Highland Support Worker from Lochaber, will join the Five Countries Bike Ride at Fort William on Monday 22nd September, and cycle with them to the finishing line at John O'Groats on Friday 26th September.
The photos show Tom and Piers at Fort Augustus, and Tom arriving at Bught Park, Inverness.
At the Highland Games
Thanks to everyone - our staff, their families and friends, our service users - whose enthusiasm helped us raise funds at the Inverness Highland Games on 19th and 20th July, and at the Lochaber Highland Games the following weekend. And a big "thank you" goes to all those who visited our stands and gave so generously.

Our Inverness stance wasn't at the centre of the Bught Park show grounds, but it was a popular stall, often with a crowd of people around it.
This photo was taken during one of the few glints of sunshine that weekend!

Birchwood Highland's stall at the Lochaber Games also attracted lots of attention.
The winner of our "guess the rabbit's name" competition was no less than Sir Jimmy Saville, who is seen here receiving his prize from Brian.
21st Anniversary fundraising events
A number of events took place on and around Birchwood Highland's 21st Anniversary date, the 25th June.
These included an abseil at Onich, near Fort William, a cycle run and walk in Easter Ross, and a Treasure Hunt in Inverness. Staff and service users were involved in organising and taking part in the events.

Despite rain and strong winds on 25th June, the abseil went ahead and raised almost £1300!
The weather on Sunday 29th June was kinder towards those who took part in the cycle run and walk between Invergordon and Dingwall.
The walkers covered a 5 mile route, while the cyclists completed the return journey of 30 miles.

First cyclist to finish was Birchwood Highland Chief Executive Peter Cattanach (photo top right) who pedalled so hard the support van could barely keep up.
A large turnout of friends and family welcomed participants at the finishing line, and everyone enjoyed the BBQ that had been pepared.
